My extended family had long had the tradition of drawing names and buying for a single person. But the hassle passing around lists, on paper or in emails, and having one person, my mother-in-law, handle all the logistics of who had who, and who had brought what for whom, was a painful and prone to duplicated or undesired gifts. So back in the mid-2000s I created a web application for the family that would relieve some of the burden.
Even after the first year of using the app, everyone in the family agreed the concept of a gift-pooling site like this was a winner. Urged me to take the application public so that anyone could use it. I resisted—the amount work to create an application that would be self-managing, allowing multiple groups and members to join, and then keeping them all separate and private would be considerable.
But finally, at the urging of my wife, I rolled up my selves and dove in. Its taken a couple of years to get it right (of course, software is never done) but as of fall of 2015 I feel the newly named "Givfts" (a mashup of 'give' and 'gifts') is a viable application that can be a big help for families and individuals.
The giving and receiving of gifts is one practice that all cultures have in common. It is universal and part of so many occasions and events. People love to receive gifts, but giving them can be equally satisfying. A site like Givfts can lessen some of the anxiety of giving...and receiving. I hope you enjoy using it.
